From tuition to books, the awarded scholarship can be used for their educational needs. 

Scholarship Overview

The OriGen Biomedical STEM Scholarship is designed to provide financial support to an outstanding high school senior who plans to major in a STEM discipline at an accredited college or university. We are committed to helping passionate Austin-area students turn their dreams into reality and contribute to the future of technology and innovation.

  • Award Amount: $500 
  • Application Deadline: April 30th, 2025

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the OriGen Biomedical STEM Scholarship, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current high school senior in the Greater Austin, TX area
  • Be 18 years of age or older upon date of application submission
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.6 on a 4.0 scale
  • Plan to enroll full-time in an accredited 4-year college/university or a community college for a degree in a STEM field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) for the Fall 2025 semester
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities, community involvement, and a passion for STEM

How to Apply

To apply for the OriGen Biomedical STEM Scholarship, you will need to submit the following:

1. Completed Application Form

2. Personal Essay 

As part of your application for the OriGen Biomedical STEM Scholarship, you are required to submit a personal essay. The essay should reflect your critical thinking and passion for advancing the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).

Please choose one of the essay prompts listed below and respond in 750-1,200 words. Your essay should demonstrate your understanding of the chosen topic, as well as your personal insights and vision for how innovations in STEM can shape the future.

Guidelines:

  1. Select one prompt from the list below that resonates with you.
  2. Ensure that your essay is clear, concise, and well-organized.
  3. Provide specific examples, relevant research, or real-world applications where applicable.
  4. Avoid plagiarism or the use of AI—your submission must be entirely original.

Essay Options

Option 1: Cryopreservation: Unlocking the Potential of Long-Term Cell and Tissue Storage

Cryopreservation is critical in medical advancements, from preserving stem cells to storing tissues for transplants. How does cryopreservation work, and what are its current applications in medicine? Discuss its future potential in areas like organ transplantation and regenerative medicine. What challenges need to be addressed to improve cryopreservation technologies?

Option 2: Innovative Cancer Treatments: Beyond Chemotherapy and Radiation

While chemotherapy and radiation are well-established cancer treatments, newer therapies such as immunotherapy, gene therapy, and targeted drug therapies are changing the landscape of oncology. Discuss how one or more of these new treatments work, and compare their effectiveness to traditional methods. What are the potential benefits and risks of using these cutting-edge treatments?

Option 3: The Future of Stem Cell Therapy in Treating Chronic Diseases

Stem cells have the potential to revolutionize the treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injuries. Discuss the current state of stem cell research and explore how advancements in this field could change the future of healthcare. What ethical considerations arise from the use of stem cells in medicine?

3. High School Transcript

An official transcript from your school to verify GPA and course history.

4. Proof of College Enrollment 

A document such as an enrollment confirmation letter, class schedule, etc., that confirms your enrollment for the Fall 2025 semester.

Selection Process

The scholarship recipient will be selected based on academic achievement and their passion for STEM demonstrated through their personal essay. A committee of OriGen Biomedical employees will review applications and choose recipients.

Completion of a scholarship application in no way guarantees eligibility or scholarship funding. A scholarship committee appointed by OriGen Biomedical shall be the sole decision-maker regarding the award of any scholarships, and its decision shall be final. OriGen Biomedical reserves the right to amend the terms of any scholarship at any time without prior notice.
